Thrifting in Oakville

My new town doesn’t offer much in the way of entertainment. I don’t have internet access at home, so the majority of my free time is spent in my college computer lab (where I am now!), or at home working on crafts. Luckily, I’ve made some awesome friends in school, who drag me out to thrift stores on a nearly weekly basis! I think the secondhand shops are the best part about this place.

Some recent finds …

I picked this up for $3.99 yesterday evening. Isn’t it perfect? It looks like a tiny suitcase. I haven’t inspected close enough to try to find a date or a manufacturer, but I’m sure it’s from the 60′s or 70′s.

It opens up to three awesome drawers! I can only assume that this case was once used to carry slides for a projector. Amazing, since I was just drooling over Leigh-Ann’s posts on repurposed slide viewers & slide culture sources! I picked up a couple boxes of empty slides that were lying in a “free to a good home” box at my school. I wonder if any companies still put images onto old slides?

I bought this over the summer at a vintage jewellery spot in downtown Toronto, but I had to include it! As a kid, I was obsessed with the film adaptations of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1993) & A Little Princess (1995). From The Secret Garden began my love affair for old-looking keys, & from A Little Princess, lockets. I have to snatch up every one I see.

A few finds from the last couple weeks: an adorable cross-stitched brooch, some earrings, & a gold watch on a chain. I have no personal use for the brooch, but I was quite inspired by it. I may add it to a small upcoming vintage section of my shop.

Finally, the ridiculous amount of books I’ve acquired since my move, as well as some retro-looking plastic tumblers! I have a weakness for children’s fantasy books, as you can see … thrifting is the best way to collect some beloved favourites. The kids section is usually a little cheaper, so the most I paid for any of these is $1.99. I’m not sure I’ll ever buy fiction at the bookstore ever again.

Happy thrifting!

  1. Awesome finds!! Don’t know what I love more, the suitcase-drawer-thingy, the locket or the watch. Sadly we don’t have good thrifting stores around here. Sometimes I find something good but I wasn’t lucky for some time now.

  2. I love those cups. You rad girl.
